White Crane: The Legacy of Fang Chi: Volume 1

I should start with a caveat: I'm not a big graphic novel fan, so I might not be the best judge... but as soon as I picked this up, I was engrossed. Vivid, gory artwork, snappy dialogue and a fast-paced narrative meant I devoured the first three episodes contained in this first volume in fifteen minutes flat. A leisurely second read through let me fully appreciate the well-rounded characters and complexities of the story - from the encounters with the feisty heroine Fang Chi, to the clever inter-linking of ancient martial art and modern conspiracy theories. I was genuinely disappointed when I realised I'd reached the last page - I'm eagerly awaiting volume two! I also very much enjoyed the "extras" at the back, which consisted of early test pages and gave an insight into the development of a comic - very interesting to someone like me who knows very little about the art form. Thoroughly recommended.
