I plant one and feed the rest to tortoises. The one I plant, I let lay out for a few days and then plant in a pot, so I can bring it in winter, but my neighbor has some out all year that look dead in the winter and come back to life annually.

When planted, will the new growth have spines/needles?

All opuntia will have needles. the one you plant is an old one from the bottom of a plant. after this isplanted the new ones will be of course tender with spines just very tiny. it will be easy to peel with a sharp knife. I hope this helps. if you see a video posted by somebody in tennesse you will see the difference between bottom ones and the very top ones.

I just stuck mine in concrete planters of dirt. If I plant them in the ground my tortoise eats them too fast. Put them about a third in.
