Range:0-12" | Resolution:0.001" | Measurement accuracy:+/-0.0015" | Part Number:530-119 The Mitutoyo 530 series vernier caliper has two sets of jaws and a depth bar for four-way measurement in inch and metric units of outside dimension (OD), inside dimension (ID), step, and depth, for applications where the highest accuracy is required, especially in scientific research and in industries where parts must fit exactly. The caliper has a dual vernier scale, with an upper scale measuring in inches and a lower scale measuring in millimeters. A 14-degree vernier face angle improves visibility and helps prevent parallax error in measurement reading. The caliper’s two sets of jaws provide the capability to make OD and ID measurements, as well as step measurements, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer steps are measured. A depth measuring blade with rounded edges provides the ability to make depth measurements. The scales are raised to slide easily and protect the graduation markings. A thumbwheel permits fast and easy measuring. A clamping screw on the upper scale rotates to control scale movement and locks to hold the sliding jaw’s position. The caliper is made of hardened, corrosion-resistant stainless steel with a satin chrome finish that helps reduce glare. The caliper meets Federal Accuracy Specifications GGG-C-111B. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units. Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

The secret ingredient is love.
I'm a dork, and I appreciate mechanical precision, so you may not care as much about what is essentially a $60 ruler as I do. That said, when you hold this in your hands, you immediately realize that someone put a lot of thought and care into this design. It is rock solid. There is no rattle, there is no shake, there is no give. Do I really need to know how many 20ths of a millimeter thick something is? Very, very, very rarely. Does it make me happy to know that this thing exists that can give me consistent, precise readings without requiring a battery? Absolutely. My only complaint is that the model I bought doesn't have a thumb wheel for fine adjustments, but that was my fault for not choosing one that had that feature.Yes, the Chinese digital calipers you can buy for half this price are smooth and easy to use. Now take the battery out of it and use it to try to measure something. What's that you say? It's hard to read? You wish you had something analog that you could read quickly and easily without having to deal with batteries? You've come to the right place.TL;DR: If you're reading this review you're probably shopping for a vernier caliper. If you care enough about accurate measurements to buy a vernier caliper, you should buy this one.

I have owned this verneir caliber for almost a year a half. The the instrument is fairly accurate
I have owned this verneir caliber for almost a year a half. The the instrument is fairly accurate. I have to add the caliber is fairly easy to read and it is reliable in the workplace. After use and washing oil and grease with water and soap, the caliber started to rust, which is strange for a Mitutoyo product, even for a caliber with this price, as cheaper ones did not have this problem. "HOWEVER", unlike the other Mitutoyo products, this did not come with the certficate of inspection, which is again strange for a Vernier with this price tag, and more importantly from "Mitutoyo". I have dealt with cheaper calibers with electronic sensors even, which are almost as accurate from smaller companies, and they came with foam padded plastic cases that protect them when not in use. This vernier came with a useless nylon sleeve, that provides no protection, which makes it difficult to put this isntrument in a tool box when moving. More importantly, unlike the other Mitutoyo products, and some cheaper calibers I experienced, this product has a little bit of resistance to slide. This is not a major issue in use, but it certainly does not provide the best use experience, as I had from other Mitutoyo products. For short, if you are just interested in an analogue vernier caliber that is fairly accurate, this one is fine, although the price tag is little bit high for the issues mentioned. That's if you do not care about the certificate of inspection, the absence of a protective case and the toughness to move slider. Although smaller names may provide smoother calibers with a case that are almost as accurate, there is always the chance of getting a product that is not as good or as reliable from smaller brands. You have the choice.

Poor quality control
As a mitutoyo product I'm sure it is accurate. I never got the chance to test it. As soon as I removed it from the box I visually inspected it and was shocked mitutoyo would let this set of calipers slide through qc. One jaw is longer than the other by about .020" and the radius that makes up the outside of the jaw is incomplete. It literally looks like they accidentally made one jaw too long and just ground the tip down so it somewhat meets up with the other one. I doubt it affects it's performance but I wouldn't even expect this from Fowler or Spi. What I received was a bad part from mitutoyo.

I love this thing
I love this thing. I bought it four years ago, because I was doing some precise woodworking (beehive box joints), and rulers were feeling awfully crude. This made me feel like I could actually see what I was doing. There's nothing I dislike about it. No problems with rust, or difficulty of movement (loosen the thumb screw?). Would be nice to have a better case for it though. The simplicity and precision is wonderful.

Perfect for wood turning
Even though I already had a digital caliper I wanted a simple analog caliper for wood turning that was easy to use and I could rely on it being accurate. These are very high quality, on par if not better than Starret. The case leaves a little to be desired but what you're paying for is the tool. Japanese make great precision instruments, I also have Shinwa rulers and they are my favorite rulers.

Its genuine mitutoyo.
No problems with my order. Not cheaply made. I have a legit mitutoyo box with all the correct paperwork and the calipers were clean and in great condition when I opened the package.

For reading mm, its perfect. but trying to read in inches, it was very hard
I wanted to have 1 caliper that can read both mm and inch. I thought this would do that when I bought it. I found the mm scale to be standard fine and easy. But when I looked at the inch scale, I got confused. Inch scale is not in decimal like engineering scale tape measure that I fell in love with. Unless I am mistaken, the inch scale on this caliper requires me to pull out a calculator or convert fraction to decimal. I have no use for a caliper that reads in franctions of an inch. I want to read for example, 0.308 inches quickly and simply without doing any conversions or calculations. For that reason, I returned this caliper and bought a much cheaper caliper ($15) that has both mm scale and decimal inch scale. Quality of the caliper is super, other than what I just mentioned.

good calipers!
I received this today and checked it out on some reference blocks, and it is spot on. I do not have much us for the 1/128 scale, but am very pleased with the OD / ID measurements.

Japanische Qualität. Top!

needs a case
The tool I would give 5 stars because it's excellent. What is appalling is that they would only provide a cheap plastic soft sleeve with a plastic button closure for a precision measuring instrument like this. Luckily the old one this is replacing had a hard case that this fits in.

Excelente medidor
Me resulta muy útil y tengo uno digital, pero si llega a quedarse sin carga la pila, utilizo el análogo.
