Hunter's Tracks

Enjoy Hunter's Track
Hunter's Tracks is the exciting story of John Hunter's efforts to capture the shady headman of a gang of ivory poachers and smugglers. During the inevitable lulls in the investigation into the manhunt, Hunter has "flashbacks" to earlier anecdotes in his career, and these interesting stories simply add to charm of the book. For example, Hunter digresses on how to hunt baboons and how they are among the worst destroyers of crops on the African continent. Hunter concludes his book with the tale of one of East Africa's most grandiose safaris taken with an Indian maharaja, who despite his royal standing turned out to be quite a good sport. You'll enjoy reading what happens when the maharaja's record Thomson gazelle is stolen by a lioness. Hunter was a fine storyteller, and this collection of tales is one of the best ever on East African hunting, big game, and the eccentric characters. I have read one other book by him and enjoy his writing very much. I read it in only 3 days. Enjoy.

The missing book !
When I was A young boy growing up in the swamps of Florida, hunting was my passion, as well as fishing, I remember going to A used book store, and I found this book by J.A. Hunter, it was the best book I have ever read, I was about16yrs. old, I read that book over and over, and later on in life I gave it to my son in law, I had heard J.A. Hunter hadwritten several books, but thru the years I could not find one, I was looking at some books by Peter Capstick, I readall of his books, very good, and unbelievable, to my amazement , Hunter's Tracks, if you have A passion for hunting, orfor adventure, this is A must have, you will reread it I guarantee it.God Bless....Jim.

I'm near sixty years old and from 1958 I'd read everything that God put on front of me, but J.A.Hunter is like my own experience, descriptions, moments, smell....fear are so realistic ..., you feel Africa.I remember in de fifties when I discover a book "HUNTER" It was in the Readers Digest book section. Now I want to know all about Hunter's life during more than 50 years in AFRICA.

Brilliant
This is a brilliant book, the first Hunter I have read, but not the last. His writing is crystal clear and straight forward, somewhat like Jim Corbett's so if you like Corbetts writings you will love this book.

quite enjoyable
This work was written when the author was nearly 70 years old and was apparently co-written by a popular author of the time (Alan Wykes). It relates the author's attempts at the behest of the game department to apprehend a ring of poachers, and interspersed with his investigation and apprehension of the bad guys he relates many of his adventures from being a big game hunter in Kenya in the first few decades of the 20th century. His career was a long one, spanning from 1908 thru at least the early 1950's, and his experiences were quite varied any consistently interesting. The work is well worth a look.
