The Cranberry to no surprise is part of the Berry family. Specifically, the Cranberry is grown on he Vaccinium Macrocarpon native to Canada and some northern regions of the USA. The plant is a low-lying short plant. The optimal growing conditions for the Cranberry can vary greatly as it is an adaptable plant. It can flourish in well lit woodland to swamp-like conditions. The plant grows flowers, but the part most interesting to cookery and supplements are the tart and sweet red berries. Amongst history Cranberries have been used for their therapeutic properties especially for the treatment of scurvy. Little did they know it was due to its naturally high levels vitamin C. The benefits of the Cranberry are mainly due to its cleansing properties. Often described as aseptic, the cranberry can reduce bacterial and pathogenic activity in the body. The main active ingredient of the Cranberry is the proanthocyanadin, a phenol compound that can maintain cell structure and reduce disease. Another recognisable molecule in Cranberry is Salicylic acid. This is the main ingredient of aspirin, however is found naturally in Cranberries. It’s thought that taking Cranberry tablets regularly will promote anti-inflammatory properties. This is paired with Vitamin C as the health benefits are extensive. The primary role of vitamin C in the body is for the formation of Collagen. Additionally, Vitamin C benefits the immune system due to its antioxidant properties, reducing oxidative stress and promoting general health. Also, Vitamin C helps regenerate Vitamin E, another antioxidant. Lastly, Vitamin C promotes normal energy metabolism and reduces fatigue.
