Magic The Gathering MTG-EO2-EN Explorers of Ixalan Box English Trading Card Game

Well worth playing.
So, let me say that this is a very refreshing and fun game mode for MTG. It plays as if the basics of Catan met the functions of Planeschase. The decks are thought out and well made, very well made, and are definitely balanced with the other decks in mind. This game is meant for MTG familiars, with no real rules except for the tile game itself.Pros:Fun, new, and interestingComes with extra tiles of each 1, 3, and 6 cost tilesComes with large deck boxes (THESE ARE MADE IN THIS WAY FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SLEEVE THEIR DECKS!!!!)Comes with more than enough double-sided tokens (unless your group really loves to drag out games)Plays easily by the 30 Minute Minimum game timeComes with some neat cards in each deck, including such cards as Time Warp, Aggravated Assault, Necropolis Regent, and Blatant Thievery as well as the Dino's and Pirates coming with their Naya and Grixis lands from the Alara Block, each with new and very nice artwork.Comes with plenty of +1/+1 counters, and comes with Scout counters, one for each clan.CONS:The price, even with decks is about 10-20 dollars too much (Catan, or Settlers of Catan as it used to be called, comes with more + a good rules book for around 50 bucks). The scout counters could've been either a bit thicker or larger, or have been little models, which could've been cheap plasticNo MTG rules book included, only the rules for the board/tile game mode, making unfamiliar mtg players have a difficult time (Personally... not a big issue except they didn't include a rule book for playing MTG... otherwise I could not care less if someone knows MTG or not... )While no rules for MTG itself are included, IT SAYS ON THE DANG BOX THAT THIS INCLUDES 4 60-CARD DECKS FOR MTG... MEANING YOU WILL BE PLAYING ACTUAL MAGIC THE GATHERING!!!! Meaning if you don't know magic... either don't buy it, or learn it.On a side note, I received two Pirate decks in this and no Merfolk deck in it. Not a big deal, but it is definitely worth noting the manufacturing error.

This made MTG multiplayer way more fun!
I do enjoy magic Multiplayer, but it sometimes grinds along, especially in the first few rounds while everyone is building their field. This little kit changes a standard MTG multiplayer into a more board game like experience. The play of the decks is the same, but it is spiced up with exploration with game changing tiles that help to spice up play and give more options to those with a little mana left over to spend. IT also makes some harder choices as you decide between playing that card you have been holding onto and exploring the next tile hoping for a gain. Replay value is high since it comes with more tiles than you use in a single play through, so you can change it up to keep it fresh. No two game will ever play the same.We also play tested it with some of our other prebuild decks. The game seems to balance fairly well even when using decks outside the set as long as the power levels are even. We even played a five player game, just made the board a little bigger, and it worked out great.I highly recommend this set. Much like the plain cards and other MTG sets that add more to the traditional game of magic, this product does a great job of changing up the traditional formula. As a bonus, the decks are a blast and contain some decent cards from the ixilan block, as well as some original cards unique to the set.

Awesome hybrid boardgame
Love this, wish I could play it everyday. Decks are a little basic but have a lot of variety between them and have cards specifically oriented for multiplayer games. The pirate deck might be the strongest as in the last two games two different people played it and won and the second time the player was brand new to the game. What makes this game awesome is the exploration mechanic. When you're deciding your starting hand and it's sub optimal, always favor lands over spells. With exploring, even if you don't have a spell to cast, you can still explore and many of the tiles are really good benefits, and some will force action instead of an arms race common to multiplayer games. Absolutely buy this, totally worth the price.

Worth the $40 in cards alone
I got this for roughly $40 and the cards in it are easily worth that much. Got this to play with friends and was surprised it didn't have a small tutorial (or life counters) for new players. Deck boxes included are oversized in order to fit fully sleeved decks into them. Chicks dig a guy who sleeves his deck. MSRP on this was really high but if you can get it for about the $40 I paid, you'll be happy, some solid cards in here and DINOSAURS rawr. Gotta love Dino's. As far as game play goes, I can tell by reading the tiles that it'll be fun, a good way to get noobs into the game and then into commander.

Good, but not at MSRP
This was a fun New way to play. The cards in here are powerful: you aren't just getting four welcome decks or something. There are some good cards that are fun to play with that have splashy effects.I think this is worth about forty dollars. Not 74.99The multiplayer mode is kinda fun and different. Better than planechase

This is fun!
This is not for beginner Magic players. More for experienced players wanting to up their game. It's like Magic the Gathering and Settlers of Catan had a child, beautiful! It takes roughly 40+ mins to play the game. Luck of the draw and strategy will make you the winner. Welcome to the next level of Magic the Gathering. Let the games begin.

This is a steal for under $40
4 really nice thematic tribal decks to teach friends, kids, or neighbors magic the gathering. The decks are pirates, vampires, dinosaurs, and merfolk; what's not to love!? The add-on island tiles are a nice light game mechanic that you can play with or simply not use. However, the kids really enjoy the island tiles, and the concept of searching the island for the golden city. If you find the golden city tile later in the game, you get to wreck the other players with it, forcing them to gang up against you; a fun mechanic which usually causes the game to end shortly after. The decks have some cards in them specific to multi-player mtg games which is well thought out. This is a great entry point if you want to learn how to play magic the gathering.

Makes Multiplayer Magic More Fun
This is a fun way to play MTG. It works just fine with both 3 and 4 players, unlike Archenemy which really needs 4 players to work properly. My boys have also played Explorers with just 2 players and had more fun than a regular 1 vs 1. But it doesn't work perfectly with 2 since the tiles that say 'when you attack player to the left/right' don't add as much variety/fun as 3+ players. You spend mana to 'explore' tiles. 1 mana for the outer ones which give weak but still useful bonus. To explore the 3 and 6 mana tiles they can't be touching lower cost tiles - so people can't rush for the better ones too quickly. Some of them give a bonus for attacking the player to your left or the player to the right, making it an interesting dynamic. The decks they come with are nicely balanced and interesting to play - but most of the time when we use it we are using our own custom decks and it works just fine with them. Because of the rule of not exploring a more expensive tile unless no less expensive ones touching it, it means you don't need some deck that ramps up mana really quickly. The game has clearly had a lot of play testing to make sure it is nicely balanced with both pre-made and custom decks. It comes with some useful +1 counters, although I have been using some wooden tiles for showing +bonuses which work really well with Magic and look nice, here is the link to the tiles . Best way to play Magic! Couldn't recommend higher
In my 18 years of playing MTG - this is the most fun I've had. The flavour of Ixalan is amazing, the decks have lots of options for using excess mana and treasure chests etc. to prevent mana screw, and lots of cool cards for manipulating diplomacy, and instants for making epic surprises in combat. Exploring is really fun and means you have more options for what to do on every turn. I really hope Wizards will make a game like this with every new MTG edition. Also it's great for teaching new players. Big thanks from here to whomever at Wizards came up with this.

Makes for an interesting Board Game format for Magic the Gathering
Not necessarily the best value for money when it comes to buying M:tG cards, but this actually makes a nice boxed set 'board game' of Magic.Possibly a good option for people who don't want to buy into the whole 'collecting' part of Magic the Gathering, but just want a board game they can pull off the shelf and play.

Great game but basic knowledge how to play Magic is required.
Great fun. Playing it with my kids (8 and 10) and we all enjoy it. The only issue is that you need to know how to play Magic (or learn).
