This product has performed well
I had a special use intended for this winch: to fit on a special built trailer hitch for use in loading and unloading a log splitter from my trailer. The winch works great in both the lower and higher gear ratios. It appears to be well built, of sturdy materials, and I am happy with my purchase... a real good value!

Wear protective eyewear when using..cable breaking in two is imminent
The winch says rated for 3500 lbs. I guess the thin cable, that came with at least 4 frayed spots on it, isn't. I bought this one to replace a 30 year old, teeth worn out, DL winch that didn't come with cable, so I bought cable at same time. I never had to replace the cable in thirty years. It is a bigger diameter than the one that comes haphazardly installed on this one. The cable on the winch I was sent was installed backward from the picture on Amazon, and backward from my old winch. I use it for a bale buggy that carries one bale of hay, that weighs a max. of 1300 lbs. I thought this 3500 lbs. rated winch was a good buy and the fact that the cable was already installed was appealing. I just feel lucky that the cable didn't put my eye out both times that it broke while reeling up a bale. The first time the cable broke, it was close to the hook with that Barbie Doll boat quality pawl on it that bent the first time I used it. I still had the old winch in the bed of my truck and some tools, so I robbed the two cable clamps off of old one and installed on the most recent end of the new cable. That was an improvement. I no longer felt that I was risking my life (in danger of the hook slipping off and hitting me in the head) each time i reeled up a bale. The second time the cable broke, I repeated the same steps as the first time, but saw a third severely frayed spot that didn't look like it had many uses before it broke. I needed to go get another bale and didn't have time to go to the local hardware store to buy and install a better cable, so I attempted to remove the bigger diameter 30 year old cable from my old winch to use on the new one, but I was unsuccessful. I, instead, removed the cable from the new winch and pulled an extra 10 inches, including the worst frayed spot, past the spool and then threaded it through the holes and let it wrap over itself enough that I think its going to hold. I wish it had a square hole in the reel so I could have robbed the old bolt and clamp, from my old one, that secures the cable to the reel. I also put wrapped the cable like it shows in the pic. and turned the winch 180 degrees. I've used it twice since that temporary make over, and it worked well. I'll feel much safer when I get a better cable installed.
