A spine-tingling, riveting read!
The plot twists caught me off guard! Once I started guessing, the plot just kept surprising me. And even if you figure some parts out, there is no way you will be able to figure everything out...Wylie, a true crime novelist, is staying in a house, while writing about the tragedy that took place there. At the same time, we get an insight into what happened in 2000 leading up to and after the incident. It all builds to a crescendo...Heather has a keen eye for detail. While reading the story, I got so caught up in the mystery of the lives of the characters, that the story just didn't seem to last as long as I thought. It was a suspenseful, nail-biting work of fiction, and 100% worth reading by all thriller and mystery readers everywhere!

Enjoyed
I haven't read anything by this author before but this book appealed to me just by the cover. There is something about remote houses in a snow storm with that claustrophobic feel about them that I seem to enjoy. This story follows Wylie, a true crime writer who is covering a family murder that happened twenty years ago. Wylie actually stays in the house where the murders happened. Flash backs to the story of the murders as seen through the eyes of Josie a teenage girl. Thrown into the mix is also a mother and daughter whose father is abusive. So there is a lot going on.I enjoyed the book and did like the snowed in, claustrophobic feel. As things begin to become clear and all the dots joined up I really didn't guess so enjoyed the twists and surprises. The ending did for me become a classic thriller, the bad guy gets, no surprises here, its thrillerland.I enjoyed the book and would try another by the author in the future.

Chilling
.The contrast to that on another level was the summertime. The story…This hiding retreat for this crime writer is a cottage where it’s in a secluded spot where peace and quiet reigns to be able to write.Except it’s a cottage where murders have previously taken place. Not for the faint hearted.A child is found half frozen in the storm, the violent blizzard that’s taking place so the writer takes the child in.I was totally enthralled listening to this on audio.Yes I’d recommend this for a chilling suspenseful read.

What lay before them was no animal. It was a little boy, frozen to the ground.
What lay before them was no animal. It was a little boy, frozen to the ground.Heather Gudenkauf's "The Overnight Guest" is a suspenseful story that kept me glued to the pages while a billowing storm raged outside my own window. The chilling atmosphere of a secluded farmhouse during a snowstorm paired with a mysterious guest and a decades-old murder is a recipe for a gripping read. The way Gudenkauf weaves together the present-day narrative with glimpses into the past kept the story dynamic and suspenseful. While the shocking twist ending was well-executed, I have to admit it fell within the realm of possibility for an avid mystery reader like myself. Perhaps that's a testament to Gudenkauf's skill in building suspense and planting subtle clues throughout the narrative. However, even if I predicted the major reveal, the journey of uncovering the truth alongside the characters remained highly engaging. What truly impressed me about "The Overnight Guest" was the seamless blending of storylines. The past and present narratives intertwined effortlessly, creating a complete and cohesive picture. Gudenkauf's writing is crisp and engaging, effectively conveying the chilling atmosphere and the emotional turmoil of the characters.Overall, "The Overnight Guest" is a well-written and suspenseful thriller. While the twist might not surprise seasoned mystery readers, the journey of discovery and the chilling atmosphere make it a worthwhile read.

Three Types Of Locked Room in One Book
Told in three points of view ( present day, Wylie - a writer in a secluded farmhouse in a snowstorm; past, Josie - enduring a family tragedy; and a young girl held captive with her mother in a basement (think: Room), this story weaves a narrative over the lives of those affected by a shocking crime.I found I managed to race through this one, the writing really set the scenes, especially as the environments are so different from my usual ones. A slight criticism in that the ending was a bit too cutesy all winding up nicely, but it suited the purpose, so, meh.
