An emotional page turner that will pull on your heart strings!
Dot has her whole life ahead of her, full of hopes and dreams. I loved her carefree nature and her friendship with her best friend Barb when we first meet her. Her home life whilst they may not have much, is one that is comforting and happy and I loved the banter between the family. When Dot meets Sol, the reader gets swept up in the romance between the pair. With Sol being West Indian and the story being set in the 1960’s, I was praying that everyone would be as happy as I was about this union but it soon becomes apparent they aren’t. If anything it was Clover’s own parents whose attitudes I was most shocked at, having loved this couple from meeting them, seeing how they put the feelings of others and what they would think before their own daughter’s happiness, it literally broke my heart. Seeing people’s attitudes back then was hard to stomach. More so when there are hate crimes and racism still very much around in the here and now.Whilst there are some parts that made my blood boil within the story, there was also so much to love. A certain recording artist and song will be forever in my heart and I have no doubts that whenever I hear that song it will remind me of Sol and Dot.Clover’s Child is a story of impossible choices and how those decisions shape the person we become. You would think a story of true love would be one of the fairy tales we were brought up on where everyone lives happily ever after. This is a stark reminder though of the real world we live in and how life has it’s ups and downs. The ending was left a little open for me as I love everything wrapped up nicely but then my heart had been captured by these characters and I wasn’t ready to leave them behind when I turned the last page. An emotional page turner that will pull on your heart strings!

Heartbreaking
As always with any of Amanda’s books I could not put this down, at times this story was heartbreaking, and does relate I’m sure to a lot of young girls who found themselves pregnant and unmarried in the 60’s and 70’s. I would have liked a little more about how Simon found out about his background sorry don’t want to be more specific as I don’t want to spoil this for anyone who hast read the book

I love Amanda Prowse books
I love Amanda Prowse books!Almost a prequel, but a fantastic standalone story charting the life of Dorothea, or Dot, in the sixties, a time when mixed-race relationships were a rare occurrence, and extremely frowned upon.We see her meet the love of her life, Solomon, a West Indian man from a wealthy family, but due to the colour of his skin, they are unable to live life the way they would like to. He renames her Clover, as to be called Dot, an insignificant blemish, is not worthy of her.Pregnant with the child of a coloured man, sent away by her parents, and married to someone deemed more suitable, this is a heartwrenching read...

Fantastic!!
I had never read an Amanda Prowse book before and will admit I only downloaded this book because it was on offer at a knockdown bargain price on kindle books. Am I glad that I did!! I would say this is one of "the best books" that I have read - ever....and have I read a few!! The story is set during the 60's and being a 60's child myself I could relate to the setting and the attitudes of the time. The book tells the story of Dot and her family who are so against her being with the love of her life, I don't want to say to much for fear of giving away the story, but I laughed and I cried. Dot's story is at times so very funny and at others it is heartbreakingand. To be honest, I could not put this book down and when I did I couldn't wait to pick it up again! I was genuinely sorry when the story was finished which made me then go on to dowload the other Amanda books....I then discovered although written afterwards - Clovers Child was indeed a pre-quel to her second book!! So I would recommend everyone to read Clovers Child before Amanda's other books. (Although not a trilogy, trese books are intertwined by characters). I have recommended Clovers Child to family and friends - a fantastic book - a great story!!

Thoroughly enjoyed it, but would have liked a better ending.
This is my first book by this author but won't be my last.I really loved this story, of Dot and Sol and the prejudice they faced in that era. I was really taken with Sol and his description of his family history in St Lucia, i could picture it beautifully. My heart broke for Dot as she dealt with the worst time of her life alone, her grief was palpable. Many times throughout this book i was so swept along with the emotions of the characters, that the tears just flowed uncontrollably, a great credit to the writer. It is very hard to review without giving away the plot, but i would urge you to read and have an open mind as the story does not always head where the reader would want it to but ultimatley where it probably should given the time and circumstances. My only negative would be that the epilogue could have een more indepth, it would have been nice to have a different ending for Dot confirmed.Great book!

Loved it
Loved this book, couldn't put it down. Seemed to wrap up quickly towards the end. I would have liked to have known if Dot/Clover ever got to meet her son Simon and how Simon tracked down his father. Would be great to have a follow up to this book. Brilliant read.

An intense read....
Fantastically written this book draws you into the world of the main characters. I read it in two days even missing my favourite tv programmes. I felt so emotional for Clover and her struggle with life, it was an intense book that I had the privilege to read. I strongly recommend you to read it......Thanks to a brilliant author. X
