A Man After God's Own Heart--A Devotional

This is a nice little devotional for men. Most of the guys I know are not really into reading, but I wanted to get them something to encourage them in their walk with Christ and I thought this was a good option. I haven’t personally read it, but I am going through the devotional by his wife Elizabeth and enjoy it.

Jim George is obviously a fine Christian man but I found this disappointing. Firstly it should be made clear that this is just for married men - quite a lot is about wife and family. Maybe retitle 'A husband after God's own heart.' Secondly, it simply assumes that the man is the 'spiritual leader' in the family and seems to have sole responsibility for this - even though Jim does say that husband and wife are 'spiritual equals'. The latter is certainly stated by Paul, but where do we find the former? The husband is 'head of the wife' but this is in the organic unity of a marriage in which the two are one. The NT never says that the man is the head of the family, children are to obey 'their parents', and it nowhere says that 'the man is to give strong protective leadership and the woman is to support and sustain life and living' (p.142). When Jim quotes Genesis he says the woman is to be a 'helper comparable to him', but the word 'helper' really means ally and it is most often used of God himself - it does not imply subservience and the rule of man over woman was a part of the curse of sin not the aim of redeemed couples. Generalisations about the different physical/psychological makeups of men and women are now largely scientifically exploded, and the ranges of variations in both gender are so great that in any case overlap in characteristics is significant. I bought two copies of this thinking to give them to Chinese friends who are new Christians (it is so difficult to find devotional books for men), but am left wondering to whom I can give them - in either the UK or the China context. Jim George is clearly a good Christian man and if you are in an American culture and your Christian tradition supports the idea that man is a 'spiritual leader' etc this may be a good book for you. I was left with some reservations.

This is a lovely devotional book. . The stories bring out the facts of every day life and how best to handle them. It is a good learning process for christians. Highly recommend.
