Q: Can you pour without the strainer?

Yes, cap has hole to let liquid go through but hold big pieces of ice. It is a complete basic set, with every thing you need to set your basic bar. You can't go wrong with it.

Does not come with recipe book, but is a nice unit.

Q: Does the shaker have a built in strainer?

Yes, the small hole strainer is located at the top of the shaker. The strainer is not a mesh type strainer. This is a very nice & complete bar set...particularly like the muddler included with the set. Hope that helps.
