Enthusiastic story telling just about survives sloppy production
I am actually enjoying the book - there are a few issues. I have the Kindle version - apart from major errors in compilation of the eBook (picture captions transposed, whole sections of text repeated) it's a bit surprising to find grammar and spelling howlers on this scale in a published work. Maybe I'm assuming outdated quality standards. The string of precis of match reports from the pink Echo are heavy going - relentless at times - but the social and historical context saves the day - great story about the conflict between players' union and Football League over maximum wage (£10 a week at that time), and interesting comment on the implications of midweek games in the days before floodlights, not to mention the difficulties caused by trying to get professional players up to required fitness levels despite the low-nutrition diet enforced by rationing. An enthusiastic book, which makes up for a lot, but a little extra effort could have produced a less slipshod product.

Great read even for non Liverpool fans
A great book well researched. A story of the difficulties of the first post war season the worst winter of the century with heavy snowfall sometimes covering the country for weeks at a time, but still games went on. The season was extended to early June such was the fixture congestion. The League leadership changed Hans several times over the last few games but Liverpool dug in to be worthy Champions . What was a puzzling feature was the amount of abuse the teams leading scorers got from their own fans ! Hard times but hard men !

Good read, even if not a football fan
I liked the atmosphere of this book, just after the war, still on rationing, Britain attempting to get back to some sort of normality. I liked the way the scene is set at the start of the season - and the progression through each match to the season finale. The photographs are excellent.I read this book on kindle and have to say there numerous typographical mistakes, which was quite a surprise but overall it was an excellent read.
