Spyderco Persistence Value Knife with 2.77" Stainless Steel Blade and Durable Black G-10 Handle - PlainEdge - C136GP

I purchased this knife a few months ago to fill in for a Kershaw knife that was more than twice the cost, but has a serrated blade that required sharpening and did not seem to hold an edge well at all. I just wanted an inexpensive EDC knife since I was kind of disappointed in my expensive Kershaw knife. Maybe I set my expectations a little low, but I was still really excited to get this knife based on other reviews. I have to tell you that first impression I was EXTREMELY impressed, but still skeptical about how it would hold up long term. So, now I am writing a review after using it for tons of stuff over the last few months. I have opened boxes, cut a lot of rope and paracord, whittled wood, shaved fletchings off aluminum arrows and lots of other everyday tasks. I was curious how the 8Cr13MoV steel would hold an edge, and WOW, it is still really sharp, and I haven't even sharpened it yet. Let me tell you just how sharp it is...the other day I was working and practicing opening and closing it with one hand sitting at my desk. I wasn't looking at it and just trying to repeat the process over and over. As I was closing the knife I saw something white fall on my desk and when I looked down there was a fingerprint the size of a pea laying on my desk. I looked at my hand and realized that when closing the blade it had shaved off the skin of my index finger so thin that my finger did not even bleed! Now that is SHARP! One last example to point out. I was working on a Cub Scout outing and we were making survival bracelets out of paracord with about 80 people. We had a lot of paracord to cut to length and we were doing it on demand as kids chose their preferred color. A few other people were trying to help and had their pocket knifes out and just making a mess of the paracord because they could not cut through all the layers cleanly. Now, this may not be the ultimate test of a knife, but I let someone borrow my knife to cut it when they were having trouble and they absolutely fell in love with it. They were amazed at how sharp it was and how fast and smooth it cut the paracord. Again, not trying to say that paracord is so resilient that no other knife can cut it effectively, just that in a real world scenario it stood out well above every other knife that others were trying to use that day. For a knife that I was hesitant to buy because it kinda looked weird compared to knives I have owned in the past, I think I am now hooked on Spyderco and will probably end up with a collection. I was online shopping for a Spyderco for my wife and decided to write this review in the process. I hope my experience helps you make a decision. UPDATE 11/11/13: If you haven't bought this knife yet or are still on the fence, get off the fence, this knife rocks! I have been using it for 8 months and I absolutely love carrying it. I have never had a knife that I enjoyed the opportunity to use as much as this knife. I also bought a Spyderco Byrd for my wife and it is a great smaller option for her smaller hands and pockets, but with the same high quality steel. With this knife I finally understand what I have been missing with other pocket knives all my life...yes, it's that good, and for the price the value is off the charts.

I ordered this knife on a Saturday and received it on Monday afternoon. WOW!!! Extremely fast delivery and I had it shipped using the Free Super Saving shipping option of 5-8 days because it was over $25.00. I couldn't believe how fast I received it. Once again WOW!!! Ok now on to the knife. The meat and potatoes. This is a great knife. It is a little bigger then I expected but I think its a perfect size for EDC. I was suprised at the size of the blade it is a little wider then I thought but now that I am playing with it I actually prefer this to a thinner blade. I carry a pocket knife everywhere I go and they seem to come in handy at the most random times and it seems like no one carries them but everyone needs one. I personally do not like little knives and that is why I think the blade on this knife is perfect. It came extremely sharp and with a fine point tip right out of the box. It effortlessly cut thru a piece of paper. I really like the jimping on the spine of the blade. My previous Gerber(Great Knife Company as well) did not have this and I think it makes using the knife feel much more natural, and effortless. The patent oversized hole on the blade makes it easy to open, I prefer the hole to a pin/bar. The blade is easy to extract with minimal effort and it has this nice smooth feel, and it has absolutely no play either front to back or side to side. I would compare the smooth easy opening of the blade to the smooth glide of a Cadillac. LOL ;) The handle is great I really like the texture and feel of the G-10 handle. This material is great for using it here in the Greater NW especially outdoors in the rain. The lock on the knife is placed on the inside of the handle and is easy to use one handed for right handers. If you are left handed it might be a little harder to use. You might want to look into one of Spyderco's ball bearing locking systems, they are much easier to open and close for left handers. The clip is a little stiff but I am sure I will work it in after a few months, but I prefer it that way so its not sliding around the rim of my pocket. It stays where you put it until you need it. Also what is real nice is you can move the clip to customize how the knife sits in your pocket, blade up or down or you can move it if you are left handed. I personally prefer to wear my knife in one of my back pockets opposite my wallet(I am left handed so my wallet goes on my left but I use my knife with my right so this works for me but might not work for everyone) and the stiff clip makes it so it doesn't slide which is nice especially since I sit on the knife. I have read in previous reviews that the screws are kinda soft so be careful when removing and tightening them because you do not want to strip them. Overall this is a great knife that I would recommend everyone own/add to there collection. The price is perfect for this knife. Even though it was made in china it feels like its American made. The box is a little simple and it didn't come with any paperwork or directions on how to clean or even how to change the positioning of the clip which would have been nice, but you can access all that information on the website. Its just nice when you get it in the box.

I hope my knife demo helps LEFTIES especially to see that this knife is going to be a bit harder to close than if you were right handed. A cut across the top of my left thumb was an example of how your hand crosses the blade unlatching lock, as where it works much differently as a right handed user folding the knife one handed. Now on to the written review, let me know if the video was helpful, it is my first video here. I just got this today. I read so many reviews, but more so watched dozens of Youtube Videos (and suggest you do to) to see the differences in the three size from Tenacious (largest) to the Persistence (this one) to the Ambitious, the smallest. I can not talk for the largest, nor the smallest - but this Persistence is an amazingly TIGHTLY BUILT KNIFE! I shaved sheet paper in 1/8th inch wide strips from the tip to the bottom of the blade with no feathering or resistance - sharp out of the box. BEWARE TO US LEFT HANDED PEOPLE: although you can rearrange the belt clip using Torx wrenches (guess wrenches is the right word) so that the blade will face up or down or either side by moving the incredibly spring steel pocket clip (which will never fail you - I cannot see this knife EVER falling loose from your belt or pocket - no way. BUT, if you look at both sides of the knife where the area is rounded out for your thumb to deploy the blade, a RIGHT HANDED deploy has more then a quarter inch ramped thumb groove to grab the blade. Even with the spring pocket clip moved (and ideally you want this blade POINT in your pocket for easy deployment) but using your LEFT THUMB JIMPING of the blade lock/release between you and the thumb hole. IT DOES NOT INTERFERE DEPLOYING THE BLADE, but closing it ONE HANDED as a LEFTY is quite difficult. You need a strong thumb to release the opened blade and as the knife closes, your thumb is still in the way. CLOSING THIS WONDERFUL KNIFE AS A LEFTY HAS A LEARNING CURVE - BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. As a RIGHTY, it is a fast open, east unlock stop and close with all fingers out of the way. I like this so much, I could not rate it lower. Lefties your thumb will be in tge path of the blade as it closes. I have the black color, the grip is comfortable and secure feeling. Even with the issues mentioned above, I would not give this knife even 4.5 stars - it is a 5 star knife. If it were redesigned, to be exactly ambidextrous - then this version might just get a 4.5. Until then, get this incredible tool, no wiggle, no movement - solid. And feel what a TRUE 5 star pocket knife this is. DON'T LET THIS review DETER YOU - I hope I have helped, a knowledged consumer is rarely disappointed - and this knife will not disappoint.

I'm the sort that does a lot of research before I buy anything, this particular knife included. In terms of its dimensions, it is just about the perfect length for a general use pocket knife (slightly under three inches). The one thing I might point out is that, while this blade is within the "regular" dimensions for a pocket knife in terms of length, the over-sized spyder hole and flat grind of the blade make it appear a lot bigger than other knives in its class. If you're looking for something that looks really small and discreet, you may want to look for a narrower blade. That said, the broad blade and spyder hole, as well as the general construction of the knife, make for a really nice, easy open. The knife also slices extremely well. In short, it does what it is supposed to do really, really well... especially for less than 30 bucks. The G-10 material used for the scales is nice and provides a good, solid grip. It isn't the most comfortable material I've ever held in my hand, in terms of the scales on the side of a knife, but like I said above... it does what it is supposed to do really, really well. It provides good, solid purchase. If I was going to hold this thing and use it to cut for hours on end (not usually my use), it might be a deal breaker though. Whittlers beware. The research that I did indicated that some of these blades have construction problems, in terms of issues with the opening. I didn't have these problems. Mine is buttery smooth. Also, I'd seen more than one forum where people talked about how the clip (which is designed to be moved) is difficult to move. Specifically, some of the hex screws on the clip vary in size, or strip easily. Again, I didn't have these problems, but it is worth mentioning them in a review, so you are an educated buyer. Some people are saying that their screws were stuck in place with blue chemical threader. Again, I did not have these problems. I bought a little hex key at Ace Hardware for fifty cents and moved mine in about two minutes. No problems at all. These issues kind of concerned me before purchase, but I decided to buy anyway. Here is why: everything I'd heard on the internet said that Spyderco had phenomenal customer service. I couldn't find a single account where Spyderco didn't make right if there was something wrong with the blade. I figured that if I did encounter a problem, they'd take care of it. If I had to wait an extra week or two for their customer service to provide me with what is, by the majority of accounts, a great knife, I could live with that. It beat dropping thirty or forty bucks more on the next spyderco model up the line. In short, my experience was a good one, and I got a really nice pocket knife for a really good price. Buyer be educated. UPDATE: I've had the knife for a few months now. It still performs excellently. The main addition that I'd make to this review concerns the 8Cf13MoV steel in the blade. It takes an excellent edge, and very easily sharpens. That said, the edge retention is not mind-blowing. If you want to keep this knife shaving-sharp with regular use, you're going to need to steel / strop it a couple times every month, and do a touch-up with your extra-fine sharpening stone every two months or so. (I'll warn you, though, there is no real reason to keep a general use pocket-knife this sharp... this is just a personal preference. If I was less picky about sharpness, I'm guessing this knife would only need to see a stone a couple times a year.) As stated above, the open/close action on mine is quite smooth, but I keep the knife free of debris and pocket lint, and I put in a few drops of 3-in-1 oil every month or so.

I own all kinds of knives from Kershaw, to S&W, to SOG, to ZT. This is my first Spyderco and I'm a fan! Although I've always admired the Spyderco brand and steel quality, I've never owned one due to the pricepoint. But I was in the market for a new EDC. My previous EDC was the Kershaw Scallion which I liked but it was a hair too small for my daily tasks....so small in fact that I lost it recently. So began my search for my next EDC. I was really bent on getting another Kershaw as I love their variety, value, and the speedsafe assisted opening! Unfortunately I live in NYC now and I can't get an assisted opening knife shipped to NYC and I didn't feel like going through the trouble of shipping it to my friend across the river in NJ :) Either way I didn't quiet find what I was looking for in the Kershaw line at the size and style I wanted....So I came across the Spyderco Persistence so figured I would give it a try. Just got it today and right out of the box it did not disappoint. The machining is excellent. The G-10 scales are perfectly ground and matched to the steel frame. The knife has zero play in the handle and the action is smooth. The knife balance is right at your index finger which makes the knife feel great in the hand. The weight is perfect making the knife very fast and easy to handle and the G-10 scales provide excellent grip without adding too much bulk. The steel is 8Cr13MoV which is the go to steel now for knives at this price point and although this knife is a few more $$ than the Kershaw the Spyderco quality make up for it. Here is a pic of the Persistence vs my ZT 0350TS. The ZT is a heavy duty knife. Which makes it too big and way too heavy as an EDC. It's the kind of knife I'll carry around in my go bag not my pocket. In summary, the Persistence is a value knife, but with the quality of the more expensive Spyderco knives. I think I may need to buy the big brother Tenacious next!!!

Wow. I grew up in the knifemaking community in the 90s and have had a lot of pocket knives over the years up to around $250. Over the last 10 years I've stuck to mostly Kershaw and Benchmade and haven't bought a Spyderco in at least 15 years and I have to say I'm really glad I did. This review is for both the Tenacious and the Persistence Both knives benefit from good stainless steel blades and liners, G-10 handles (which used to be standard on top-end knives) with plenty of grip, great jimping for the thumb, 4 position carry, and great lockup. These knives are a steal and probably worth double to triple the price if made in the US - even though it is made in China you never would know if it wasn't on the blade. The Persistence is a great little box cutter and light to mid duty knife: it has a very good 2.75-inch blade, sharp, and is both comfortable and fairly secure in my hand but there is not quite enough room to get what I would consider a truly secure grip. Overall I would say it is the better everyday carry (EDC) knife for someone who does not have a large number of heavier tasks (myself included) and does not frequently wear gloves while working. The Tenacious is one heck of a knife and for a 3 3/8-inch blade this thing is massive. Because of the thumb hole the the blade is very large and the handle ergonomics are superb. While this knife easily capable of light duty tasks, it's real edge over the Persistence is going to be heavier tasks. The handle is much larger and allows a stronger and more secure grip for heavier tasks and I believe will remain so even when wearing work gloves. However, due to it's size it is a bit less EDC friendly both because it takes up a lot of room in the pocket and is going to be more intimidating in public for less knife-friendly crowds; locally pocket knives are restricted to the 3-inches or less blade so I'm very much debating returning it versus just keeping it for home and outdoors tasks.

After first receiving the knife I thought it was a bit smaller than what I felt I needed to have as a daily carry but after using the blade for a little while it became apparent that my previous thinking was incorrect and that a slightly smaller and therefore much more agile blade would not only be able to complete tasks encountered on a day to day basis but even excels at many of them for which I previously used a larger blade. It comes very sharp, although I prefer to have a mirrored edge so I resharpened it, something that was made very easy with the steel it is made of. Although this steel is not one of the top knife steels used, hence the price, it has performed better than other blads i have with the same steel likely due to better heat treatment on it which although done in china was likely following Spyderco's methods and standards. Even though this may be slightly small for an outdoorsman or bushcraft where something a bit more heavy-duty would be needed for things like batoning or self-defense, this knife is Overall a great EDC knife for anyone who has a lot of cutting tasks. Lastly, the knife is nice and light and therefore disappears in your pocket which also brings me to my only negative, and this goes for any Spyderco I have seen in the past, is that it does not come with a deep carry clip and many I could find online tend to cost as much as half of this knife making it difficult to justify adding one instead of the included clip that is on it stock. Not a biggy, just a personal preference to have the knife less visible in my pocket, and unlike just dropping it into the pocket, still being easily accessible. However, don't le that get in the way of you purchasing what i think is a really good knife for the 40 bucks it costs!

Bought this knife 9 years ago, and it's still my every day carry. I know someone else who bought the Tenacious, but honestly that was a little bigger than I needed. I was looking for something that didn't take up too much space in my pocket, but could still cut like a bigger knife. Things to consider: G10 handle is excellent, great for the price point. I prefer non serrated blades, as they're a little easier to sharpen. For ease of opening, I prefer the thumb hole over the stud. The jibbing is large and curved, easy to hook your thumb onto for secure cutting. Time tested liner lock. Multiple attachment points for the clip, I keep it tip up in my front left pocket. I've had expensive knives before, unfortunately lost a really nice Benchmade. That's why I bought this one, I wouldn't be torn up if I lost it or something happened to it. I purposely came back 9 years later to review this knife because I almost lost it tonight! Forgot I had it on me and couldn't get into a venue due to security. Left it on the top of the tire of a parked car nearby and hoped it was still there when I came back. Fortunately it was, but to be honest, if it was gone I just would have bought another one to replace it. Fantastic price to value ratio, super durable, and hasn't shown a single sign of wear aside from the blade. I've sharpened it many times over the years without fail. Awesome knife!

Ein wirklich sehr geiles Messer. Sieht sehr gut aus, kam sehr scharf an, keine optischen Mängel und es macht süchtig damit herumzuspielen. Ein Stern muss abgezogen werden, da mir persönlich der Preis zu hoch war. Bei einem Preis von ca 45-50€ würde sich niemand beklagen.
