Jack and the Beanstalk

"Jack and the Beanstalk" by Nina Crews is an example of imaginative illustrations! Crews (daughter of children's author/illustrator Donald Crews) inserts photographs of children into OTHER photographed settings, creating dreamlike illustrations for classic and original stories, poems, etc. in which children find (or fantasize) themselves transported to other places, worlds, possibilities. In the preschool classroom or at home, Nina Crews' books are perfect for author/illustrator studies. My students have created their own "Nina Crews Style" illustrations, with stories to go with them! And have compared the illustrations to the very different style of her father!It amazes me that this author/illustrator is not more well-known and celebrated! She's one of my favorites...and my list includes Maurice Sendak, and the brilliant Theodore Geissel, aka Dr. Seuss.
