Good for starters
Really enjoy putting the family together. Straight forward, got right into it. Try the free download first which provides just about all the functionality, just can't save it. I found a new copy for $30 and it has definitely been worth it. Most of the generated charts/views are helpful. Easy to add people and information and make corrections.Because this is my first time around the block I can't address the complaints I have read of more advanced genealogists. I have not done any on-line research. The web site features are OK, doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it. As I am adding biographical sketch info I'm finding the prepopulated lists don't match the terms I would use. I have added some media but haven't tried all the editing features.Bottom line: As a beginner I wanted an easy to use program at a price that wouldn't cause buyer's regret if it didn't work or I burned out on the family. MacFamily tree fit the bill. Recommended!

Nice Start - But
This software package leverages nice graphics and has long term potential to be a great tool. However, Synium has a long, long way to go. The software would not accept all data during a simple GEDCOM data transfer (test file of about 20 names). It cannot figure out the hierarchy of many city, county, state, county locations transferred into it. It lost source information and other notes. For the LDS Community, it does not appear to have the capability to identify the LDS Temples were ordinance work has been done. The interface with LDS FamilySearch is crude, and not very useful for folks used to the capabilities of software packages like Rootsmagic (PC Based software). If you are a MAC user and new to family history, just starting out - this software package might be adequate. However, you would be wise to check out Reunion 9 (we may see Reunion 10 later in 2011). Reunion is not fancy but is a capable "workhorse" and good data manager. My data transfer to Reunion of 2500+ names when flawlessly in about 10 seconds.

I would not buy another
It has none of the user friendly components that it's predecessor had, it is had to use.

It's OK
It's ok, it's an easy way to have a family genealogy. I haven't tried any other software so I can't it imagine it being any different than MacFamily Tree. It doesn't "wow" me but it serves its purpose well.

This software is very difficult and hard to figure it out so I gave up. $50 down the drain.

Good reports, good deal!
Update: Another reason to like this product - they keep updating it making minor improvements along the way!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am surprised by the negative reviews here - I have used Reunion / $90 - and this / $30 & I like MFT! I won't say I 'prefer' it - more later - but it is bargained priced for starters. Bad news? I do find data entry CLUNKY if not outright difficult & navigation does take quite some getting used to. The "world history" feature is superfluous to the task at hand. The 3-D tree is just bizarre, IMO. The world globe is eye candy that, again, is superfluous, but perhaps nice if you have ancestors a variety of places around the globe. That said - one big ADVANTAGE over Reunion is that you can always, and easily. get to an actual 'tree' view - something quite useful for me at least. And the reports are great & easy to find - maybe Reunion has the same, but I don't think so. Example: relationship chart - pick 2 people - get the relation - shazaam! 2nd cousins once removed! Maybe other folks 'know' this stuff right off, but I find it useful. Kinship report, double ancestor chart - all *very* nice, easy to find features. I also like the fact that MFT puts your photos inside the database package to avoid the worries of them going missing. So I choose MacFamilyTree for the reports & easy access to tree views, & Reunion for data entry and logical, linear look. Oh, Reunion has much nicer looking web export (opinion) as well as the ability to easily mark some comments confidential (unpublished on web upload) that MFTM lacks. GEDCOM import / export seems to work well on both in my limited experience. Bottom line? If you can get used to the interface, this is an excellent program. Start here - it may be all you need. Heck, if you are not paying the $$$ for an Ancestry.com subscription, you can even afford to buy *both* programs & GEDCOM export between the two! (call me crazy!) Have fun!

Don't buy this
My idea of a family tree is that it would show the children's branches coming from the parents, with the children listed in order by age.MacFamily Tree does none of that. They have a random default that sometimes the line from the child comes from the mother, sometimes from the father, sometimes from the middle. There is no consistency and no sense in the way they do it, making your tree look like it is full of step children. They also do not list the children in order by age. The order is random. They said there is no way to set it do that. You can go in by hand and manually replace each child in order on the tree. All the emails that I have sent them have been answered sarcastically. Don't buy this product. You are better off getting a free family tree builder online.

Fair but not perfect
I transferred all my 500+ member genealogy details from Family Tree Maker on a PC to MacFamily Tree. It looked ok at first but spending more time with it showed some odd results such as a woman being married to her husband and her son, there were other difficulties as well. Trying to delete people with wrong relationships proved impossible so far but I may not have found the method yet.The displays took some time to get used to as they were different to FTM, but this was known before I ordered it. I quite like the programme but still find myself looking for buttons to get me back to a certain place. Some of the controls don't seem to be as obvious as they might be. However I expected to take some time learning this and will persevere.

Superb
I have had a lot of fun, still am, researching in to my family tree. The only thing I can say is negative about it is the menu system can get a bit confusing. That aside the product is very well supported and there are updates coming out a fair amount of time giving updates and bug fixes. If you are looking for a great mac family tree software then I can highly recommend.

MacFamily Tree
My existing geneality file would not run on my iMac so I needed something else. I did not want to loose all my files from the previous software so I saved it as a gedcom file. This imported smoothly into MacFamily Tree. I have found that I can find my way around the software without much trouble. Seems intuitive in many ways. Would recommend it. Can import photos. audio and video. I have imported many photos. without any trouble. Not tried audio or video. MacFamily Tree V6 (Mac)MacFamily Tree V6 (Mac)

Genealogy
I find this program very good for my Family History use. The only downside(if you can call it that) is the constant updates. That said the updates are easy enough to install and you don't lose any files by doing so.

A major disappointment
Waited for this for nearly ten days - I did order just after Christmas but it arrived today. Installed the latest software upgrade for Mac OS which may be coincidental and then installed Family Tree which was version 6.0.2. Was offered free upgrade/update to 6.0.10 which made me wonder about the number of 'improvements' - every upgrade had a list of fixes, etc. but that didn't download until after registration. However, no worries until came to register which is needed for the full version to run and upgrades to be downloaded. Serial number is printed on CD cover and first attempt told me the number was wrong. Tried twice more, checking against CD cover label each time but same result. Everything then locked so over to support in Germany who replied to my email in about 30 secs asking for s/n. Nothing heard since but will update after it works!! Looks good on paper. MacFamily Tree V6 (Mac) UpdateNew registration number sent by Synium which allowed me to register immediately but program would not update. Email again and reply was that updating will not take place on some Macs because of clash with MacOS. Solution would be to delete installed program and downloasd from Synium site. Decided to return package to Amazon instead.Comments on Apple Mac Store from three users show one very happy, two found operation slow and not always functioning correctly. You may be lucky but do be warned. MacFamily Tree V6 (Mac)
