A good first impression, more to follow.
Just received and unboxed this unit today. Haven't put it to any kind of test yet. I had an old Ryobi that isn't worth tuning any more after a dozen years or more and poor maintenance and mixing of fuel on my part. I got my value out of it and now it can rest. This Troy-Bilt was packaged well and arrived intact. Very easy to quickly assemble the few parts that needed to be attached, like the guard at the end and the handle. It comes with the right quantity of oil to add prior to first use (very helpful or I would be inclined to overfill it). It started right up as per the instructions with no problem.I immediately noticed that this is a good couple of lbs heavier than my old 2-cycle Ryobi and I think I'll be using the shoulder strap for this one. a different balance and feel than the old one due to the difference in weight. The blue plastic choke lever is unnecessarily flimsy and feels like it'll break if forced to move at all. The engine is certainly bigger and bulkier than a 2-cycle, but I already like not having to mix gas and oil AND it's much quieter and smoother sounding than that typical blatty 2-cycle sound! One thing I really like is that the shaft on this is the same as on my old Ryobi. I'm going to keep the Ryobi for extra parts and can hot-swap the lower part so I can keep a string cutter head on one and the brush cutter on the other! Seems overall like a pretty solid machine. I'll add to this after using it a few times.

Overall a good purchase. The engine runs well
Overall a good purchase. The engine runs well, but not awesome. This is my first time with a 4-cycle so I can only compare against a 2-cycle. I love not having to mix oil & gas and keeping that around in a separate container. However, my only comment about the engine is, it seems to take a while (5 minutes) to warm up and stay running. Thankfully I purchased the JumpStart(er) .. which makes starting (restarting) a breeze. Because of the engine and long warm up (or whatever the issue is) , this takes away 1 star. The reason for dropping another 2 stars, is because of the bump head (trimmer line). After only 20 minutes of trimming (long) grass, the bump head melted and started wobbling .. yes melted. I wasn't too concerned at first because I assumed I would just replace the bump head with a replacement head (Gator 8010) .. however, the bump head is not replaceable (at least, I cannot remove the head from the curved shaft). I've Googled and searched .. and found no way of removing the bump head .. which in the end, makes half of this purchase a total waste of money. Thankfully, my old 12 year old weed whacker (yes 12 year old Home Depot special), trimmer attachment fits just fine on the Troy-Bilt. It needed a new trimmer head .. so I purchased the (Gator 8010 - w/ LoNoiz LN130MSP-2-professional .130 trim line) and (Gator 4680) and along with my other attachments .. can get back to my yard work. As a side note: I highly recommend the .130 trim line .. I've battled trimmer line for years with my metal fencing eating up the standard .095 line, feet at a time .. but with (slightly more expensive) .130 line, I finished off my fence line with only replacing 1 strand of 6" line.

Great machine so far
As I understand it, this is the previous generation Troy-Bilt 4-stroke. I had purchased (and returned) three of the newer 4-stroke models through my local hardware store. Each one had an issue of some sort, so I bit the bullet and purchased a different brand 2-stroke unit. I still have that weedeater and it works great; however, I missed the torque of the 4-cycle and the Troy-Bilt attachments didn't fit quite as snug. About three weeks ago, I decided to purchase this model. So far, it works wonderful. The extra torque this 4-stroke provides makes using the heavier duty attachments (edger, brush cutter, pole saw, cultivator) much easier. Edging with the 2-stroke was very difficult, but this 4-stroke cuts through it like butter. I still like to use my 2-stroke unit for the string trimmer as that provides better control over the throttle speed, but I'd highly recommend the 4-stroke (specifically this model) for the attachments that have a tendency to get bogged down easier. The only reason I'm rating it 4 starts instead of 5 is because the unit has a great deal of vibration in comparison to my 2-stroke unit. This could just be a characteristic of 4-strokes versus 2-strokes, as the engines have more moving parts, but it does make your arms feel like Jello for a few hours after use.Overall, I'd definitely recommend this unit.

Excellent Trimmer
I purchased this trimmer because of the 4 cycle engine and the add on "toys." I purchased it with the add on Brushcutter Attachment. Apparently, the unit was dropped during shipment, causing a pin on the cover to crack off. An e-mail to Troy-Bilt was all that was needed to get a replacement part shipped to me via UPS. On its initial use, I did have a little trouble getting it started (I assume it was just a part of the learning curve since this is my first string trimmer.) Subsequent uses have been trouble free except for some jams of the bump head. I've learned to be proficient at disassembling and reassembling the bump head and attribute some of my problems with not advancing the string often enough. I've used it for a total of 4 days in a 3 week period for a total of about 15 hours and swapping out the string trimmer and the brushcutter frequently. A friend briefly used my string trimmer to compare against her electric string trimmer. She was surprised at how light my trimmer was compared to her electric and how much power and cutting width it had. She did mention that the unit felt more balanced and attributed it in part to the strap that I had left on from the brushcutter attachment. (The brushcutter comes with the J handle and the strap. The instructions suggest that you replace the D handle and leave the J handle on.)Now she is thinking of buying the same trimmer. After the initial time that I started the motor, it has started effortlessly. I am using E10 gas. I'm waiting for an excuse to buy the pole saw.

If you love a 4 stroke motor for your gardening needs, you can't go wrong with this product.
I was looking forward to giving this product to my eldest daughter as an xmas present. It never arrived on time and I asked for a refund, there was no problems with that problem. I already have this product, and I love it. The 4 stroke motor is great, the throttle response is immediate and effective. This will save me time and money using this product.

TERRIBLE!!!
Terrible! It was almost impossible to get it going out of the box. I was told I had to “break it in” so I continued to try and start it up, but it rarely caught. I went back to my trusty electric trimmer. EXTREMELY disappointing!
