Did the job for me
After reading the reviews, I was a little uncertain if I'd like this product. However, it appears that some reviewers may have a different situation or have some use problems. Notably, the "sticky" silicone gel spot has a plastic cover that must be peeled off before it has any positive effect on holding the unit in position. Note that this is NOT a "glue" but just a slightly sticky substance that increases the friction hold on the surface upon which it sits. The other factor is that the clamp system can exert an excess amount of pressure on the power adaptor, depending on the device you're trying to use. I have a Tom Tom GPS that came with another vehicle. I wanted to use it in my 'other' car as well. The battery life of the GPS proved to be insufficient for use beyond a couple of hours ... so I had to purchase a cigarette lighter 12vdc to USB power adaptor. Using the OEM connector, the GPS ended up resting on the connector on the bottom of the GPS -- this was obviously a bad situation as, over time, the pressure was likely to damage or break the connection on the circuit board. My first "fix" was to cut some styrofoam packing I had laying around to raise the GPS off the connector -- but this put the Dashboard Mount at the extreme of its opening and was a hassle to place and remove the GPS. I purchased a right-angle mini-USB cord (with regular USB at the other end) and that solved the problem. Using the jaws of the Dashboard Mount, the GPS stands up at an easy to see angle and the right-angle USB connection does not bottom out, removing stress on the connection.Once the connection problem was solved, I've found the iTrek Universal Dashboard Mount to work like a charm. It's heavy weight (it seems to be filled with sand) with the sticky pad get it to hold fairly well on the dashboard of my car. I imagine that under severe and violent maneuvers, that it would likely slide to one side or off the dash ... but under normal driving, it stays right where it's put.My only quibble -- as noted by some other reviewers -- is that the bottom has a slightly convex shape that makes the unit seem less stable that it appears to be in practice. A flat or concave bottom would probably 'grab' the dashboard more comfortably. However, even with this flaw, the holder has been satisfactory for my needs and allows me to quickly put the GPS out of sight when leaving the car parked, etc.

Great Product; some design flaws do exist
This was a great purchase for my 2004 BMW 325i. The leather finish continues to uphold the classier look of the car without leaving any marks.I will say that due to the bulge at the bottom of the holder, the sticky pad that is located below, near the rear of the product, does not stick well to my vehicle's dash. However, since it is quite top heavy, it does not move about unless I decide to floor my gas pedal (which I tried and the holder did take a tumble to the floor).Otherwise, the construction is very good. It seems that it will last a significant amount of time without breaking as components used are of high quality. Overall, a great product, but getting rid of that bump/bulge at the bottom would allow it to sit better on top of dashes.

Excellent product
Pros:- Fits very well on a RX 300 dash (on either side of odometer) and comfortably accomodates Note 2 with a bulky case on- excellent build quality- I left the tape on as indicated in other reviews as I didn't want it to leave any marks on my dashboard- no suction operation, very easy and convenient to move out of sight- the clip pressure is optimal- the weight of the device is optimal - it doesn't slide easily. Stability also depends on dashboard materials- precents direct sunlight on the screen5 STARS!Cons:- Only available in Black- On smaller phones, side buttons (volume) can be difficult to operate. On Note 2, you can always offset it so that buttons can be operated- Will slide under extreme braking/turning

It holds my iPhone 5 ok
I recently started using my iPhone 5 as a GPS when driving to/from locations for work. Siri can be handy at times for navigating, even if she does occasionally tell me to park on a highway and walk across a parking lot to my destination... But, back on the original topic, holding a phone when driving is just not very effective. I really like to see the screen and be able to anticipate what's coming up.So I wanted to find a way to support my iPhone and hopefully also my Garmin GPS which I still use from time to time. Looking at this stand online it looked like it would work. And, I will honestly say that it does hold both my iPhone and Garmin somewhat acceptably. The clamp doesn't open too wide, and the spring is pretty firm. This can make it a little awkward to put either device into the jaws. And, downright impossible if I'm driving. (I know, I should just pull over to the side of the road to set up...) The clamp can also wind up pressing the buttons on the side of my phone if I place it in there incorrectly. The base is fairly large, and doesn't really sit very well in the one level tray area on the dash of my Ford Edge. it will sit in there, but when I pivot the unit to face me it winds up sitting slightly askew. All in all this works, and it's not hugely expensive. But, it also didn't knock my socks off. I'll continue to use it, but if/when it breaks I probably will be looking for something a little different next time.

Fantastic for my purposes
I didnt buy this item for the discribed purpose, so i do not have a problem with it sliding around. I use this mount to watch movies on my ipod while laying down or while sitting at my desk. It is wonderful for that purpose. The multiple notches make it possible to change the angle to whatever fits my needs. Although the bottom is kind of bulging out as mentioned on other reveiws, it is not a problem if youre not using it on your dashboard. It is very heavy, very stable and extremely well made. I would recomend it to anyone. It is certainly much better than taping my ipod to a metal box like i did for 7 or 8 months. Just a fair warning, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if your charging port is on the sides. You will not be able to charge it unless it is on the top or bottom due to the way the item holds the device. Other than that, i coule not have asked for anything better.
