The Hurricane

Rubin The Hurricane Carter played by Denzel Washington was a professional boxer who was framed for a triple murder. It would seem to be another story about a man fighting against injustice but it’s not. That’s because it gets kind of weird when he is helped by a teenage Vicellous Shannon who was from Brooklyn but being raised by a white Canadian foster family made up of three friends Liev Schreiber, John Hannah and Deobrah Kara Unger. The three helped out Shannon in high school and decided to take him back to Canada to help him get into college. That does not sound normal. They became Carter’s main advocates in court to try to free him. The story flashes back and forth between the present as Carter tries to get out of prison and the past to explain how he got there.Washington provides another inspiring role. In prison for instance, he refused to comply with the rules as he didn’t believe he belonged there. He sacrificed as well such as when he divorced his wife because he didn’t want her to give up her life hoping that he would someday be released. Washington does a voice over during much of the movie quoting sections of Carter’s autobiography which include some powerful words about his struggle.Shannon provided a fresh young face. He has such enthusiasm and is called to action by Carter’s book.The movie focuses upon how racist the justice system is where black men like Carter were constantly targeted. As Washington says he committed no crime the crime had been committed upon him.

hola to all.i was a teenager when i think he was in prison etc met lesrathe 80's etc. but i know i have never heard of this until atty.told me about this amazing film. i am so happy she told me,she is a FORMER Judge. as,being a advocate on civil rights,equal protection for ALL innocent on parental-child rights in new jersey tri-state area nyc etc.i know how this man must have felt.the fact a prosecutor can go to court proceed as if he has REAL evidenceall conjured up,fabricated withheld etc. all in the name of jealous hatredto secure a state win shows as the judge say at the end of the film and for the "ruling"to then be UPHELD once the proof is verified of the fraudon the court,etc. the lies fabrication,as that is a violation of the worse kind etc. i love the judge at the end of the movie said it BEST.(what the "state"did to him,judge said analogous to my paraphrasing is and would be more worse then the actual person who DID indeed do the crimeetc.)thus must vacate his old verdict,etc and i agree wholeheartedly...as we know how this man must have felt being the advocate i am falsely accused,people who were set up framed etc.as right now:we have a case actually here inN.J.MULTI MILLION $ Dollar suits are pending currently and more to come 09* where the state of new jersey attempted to assert presumably how this N.J.parent abused her child.That she was the"WORSE ABUSE"parent,her case was in n.j.history as quoted by THEIR THERAPIST STEPHANIE AUERBACH(Millburn N.J.) that the mother just all the sudden flip out,went all crazy,by beating child severely with a hanger,that mother inflicted EXCESSIVE CORPORAL PUNISHMENT ON HER CHILD?However everyone reading this review there were not 1 but SEVERAL CLEAR COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN"the night in question of the child" clear color "PIX,DOCUMENTATION,POLICE/DYFS files all proving beyond ANY doubt from anyone that the state clearly LIED......N.J. D.A.G.(Deputy attorney General here in new jersey)BROUGHT this case to the UNION COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN ELIZABETH,NJ knowingly he has NO EVIDENCE STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT ABUSE TO CHILD,WE KNOW THIS NOW BY THE DISCOVERY,putting time line together and collecting even reports saying MOTHER DID NOT DO IT SHE WAS CLEARED,WE CAN'T SUBSTANTIATE ABUSE TO CHILD AND OR NEGLECT!they all lied! and suit has been filed on behalf of the 2 girls damage by being torn apart from mother on a GROSS NEGLIGENT/SEVERE FALSEHOOD.(DYFS STAND FOR DIVISION YOUTH FAMILY SERVICES)new jersey CPS agency,they all lied framing the mother for incentice,bonus etc then put child in DIRECT HARM, THE LAWSUIT FOR OUR TEAM NOW IS "PENDING"and more to come in winter 09.AS WE ARE ALSO HERE IN THIS CASE PUSHING FOR CHANGED LAWS As well tougher penalties for workers at the division who withhold,fabricateinvestigatory procedure etc. regarding new jersey CORRUPT DYFS-CPS,so we know how the "hurricane must have felt"and thankful this GREAT ACTOR wasable to pop out of our t.v.screen and make us FEEL what the"hurricane"musthave Really been going through. i know MANY WHO LOVE THIS FILM ALL RACES.we are so happy/so glad he is OUT and free now.this stupid bias non-astute prosecutor has no proof just the officer/detec.was JEALOUS that was flagrant.they were just non-astute andVERY JEALOUS,of this good lookin'nice talented smart black man,this is evident,that you have to set some one up because of that,how disgusting.but we are so happy the HURRICANE fought back,after at 1st wanting to just give up he never did as he KNEW he was INNOCENT...god knew it too.So glad the white advocate team came to help him and young black boy lesra* AS THE WAY THEY WERE ABLE TO DISPROVE ALL OF WHAT THE STATE WAS ATTEMPTING TO DO, I LOVE IT CAN WATCH IT OVER AND OVER SINCE GETTING IT OFF OF AMAZON THIS YEAR!Albeit yes some has been altered for more drama ihear who knows,but i love it and i am so happy DENZEL did a 10000% great job in each scene,best ethnic actor in my opinion of OUR time.love him ! he just CANNOT MAKE A HORRIBLE MOVIE,no wonder he is so great in each filmthat do not happen with EACH ACTOR,denzel is wonderful in this film throughout. ESPECIALLY TODAY....THERE IS SOMETHING THAT IRKS ME TO NO END: WHEN A LONE CROOKED MAN, ONE MAN CAN ORCHESTRATE SO MUCH PAIN, A LIFETIME OF PAIN ON OTHERS, AND OUR WHOLE COUNTRY AND IT GOES ON AND ON UNTIL THERE IS SOMEONE WHO STANDS UP FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. HOW CAN THAT BE? BUT IT IS. But it is...reality! But it is reality! ONE MAN......ONE MAN LOWERS THE BAR INCREDIBLY SO...ANOTHER MAN RAISES THE BAR INCREDIBLY SO.Well performed, well written....held in a slow but methodical presentation to make the viewer a part of the ''''essence'''' of this justice to know that it is wrong. And to fight for justice is to help justice rise. Rise. Rise. And, at the same time the coming and knowing that Right will sometimes rise no matter the odds.A brutal undertaking launched upon a man with pride making the toll he was forced to live even worse but it was relief for me that there were decent people about that dreamed and hoped and worked hard to make justice prevail. ALL AMERICANS SHOULD VIEW THIS FILM.

Human beings... Those words should mean more to everyone one of us. Color. What a fragantly ignorant thing. To treat another human being so egregiously shatters my soul. Today our courts still let injustice happen. Stand for justice. Stand for the truth. Let the hateful see you smile. It harms them more than anything you can do to them.

This is the story of boxer Rubin Carter who was wrongly convicted of a triple murder in New Jersey in 1966, not once but twice! Without wanting to give too much away the film focuses on his time in prison and he uses that to go through his case piece by piece to find all of its flaws which he publishes in his book while still inside. He also trains to make his body a weapon. He eventually receives outside help from a boy he reads his book and believes in him, and his family take up his cause despite lofty opposition. He is eventually freed in 1985 when he takes his case to the Court of Appeal despite all the risk this carried.This is definitely well worth a watch if only to appreciate Denzel Washington’s master class of a performance and excellent narration. The film will also introduce you to a real life land mark piece of history if not already familiar to you.I have also read that the film is slightly biased as it skips a lot of Carter’s violent past and paints him almost like a saint. But that is only a minor criticism and definitely shouldn’t be a reason to skip this movie.

Inspiring; moving; the actiors are ALL brilliant. Havent seen in a while so when I saw this I couldnt remember the outcome; I was rivetted; I coiuldnt believe that the Police cop could get away and have so much hate- Am ordering the hurricane book '' the Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender to Number 45472 " and the book he was reading in the cell. 'The awakening of Intelligence'.I find it very upsetting that a racial injustice could be done like this, from the power of someone in a position who can manipulate and create evidence in order to deprive an innocent man of his 'life' and title. Thank god for the brave selfless guys that came to save him. The sad thing is, this is a true story, and there must be hundreds upon hubdreds of victims who had this happen ; in jail, and never got to write or speak about it. Great Film. As always, Denzel Washington was superb. Liev Schreiber was in it and he is a very under rated actor. Recommend this film 5 stars.

Saw this about 9 years ago, and could still remember it well, so bought this as children have now grown and would like to see it too.Cant write anything more articulately about the content than other reviewers about this film based on true events.The group of people who eventually helped to win his freedom first started on their campaign when a young charge picked up a book about Rubin Carter, read it and pestered them until they relented. When this young charge questioned about luck in picking up the book, the unforgettable line "sometimes books choose you...." in answer to his musings will stay with me always.Denzel Washington is sheer class and brings depth and poignancy to this thoughtful and memorable film.The short clips of the real Rubin Carter at the end of the film show him to be a man of depth and great humility. How this cruel and dreadful miscarriage of justice could have happened to this genuinely nice man defies belief.

Denzel Washington is so convincing as Rubin Carter that one forgets that he is, indeed, an actor playing a role. From the beginning to the end, Denzel is perfect. The film made me think about how poverty and prejudice can ruin a person's life when misfortune, such as being in the wrong place at the wrong time, visits. I didn't think that I could possibly like a movie that I already knew so much about. What a moving experience! Anyone who enjoys superb acting and a story with a rewarding, emotional ending should not miss this film.
