Excellent Reference for building Revell U-Boat Model.
I've been buying a lot of these Haynes "Owner's Workshop Manual" recently. They are an excellent reference item when building model kits and easy to read as a stand alone book. They follow a standard format- history, variants, Use and Maintenance. The books are usually written by former user/experts and are always very informative. Also, the quality of photos and illustrations are second to none, often showing the unseen/hard to get to areas. Haynes are onto a winner with these, as they are an excellent addition to a reference library. Currently using this as a reference guide while building a 1:72 Revell U-boat - Highly recommended companion !

A good find for anybody interested in this topic.
A nice addition to any collection concerning U-boots. It has lot of information about the Kreigsmarine and the War in the Atlantic WWII and uses very detailed photographs taken inside and outside U995 which is based at Laboe - the War memorial near Kiel, in northern Germany. Full of technical information and describes life and work aboard a serving U-boot very well and I am sure anybody with an interest in this topic will be pleased to collect it!

Sadly don't bother
I have to agree with other reviewers here in that I feel this book does a disservice to other Haynes manuals (I pre-ordered this on the strength of other Haynes books I own and my interest in the subject matter) and whilst I didn't expect any revelations in this book I do feel it has drifted far too far from the original format in that it is hardly a technical manual at all there being only one (poor) cutaway drawing in the whole book and the author clearly doesn't have a grasp on or particular interest in the subject. The 'detail' photos are just what anybody else visiting Laboe could have taken, and if lacking in technical details it is not very enlightening on the U-boat war either. In short I feel I could have written a better book myself (and if youv'e read this review you'll know I'm no writer.

Not a terrible effort but not great.
Having read this i agree with the reviews of this book, it is flawed and each page repeats the narative next to a photo again in the text which is a little anniying. Overall the book is ok not as good a my other haynes manuals of which i have about 10 mainly on ww2 subjects. Lacking in detail but still a quite good read as i like the subject matter hence the 3 stars.

Some good photos of extant U boats
The book was mainly concerned with the operation of the U boats in the battle of the Atlantic. A few of the photographs are wrongly annotated. Not enough technical cut away stuff for me.
